Monday after Pentecost

Monday after Pentecost

At St. Augustine’s House we begin ordinary weekdays this week as the (liturgical) 10th week of the year. In many countries it is observed as a national holiday, Whit Monday or Pentecost Monday. In the Orthodox Church it is known as Monday of the Holy Spirit.

Whit Monday gets its English name from following “Whitsun”, the day that became one of the three baptismal seasons. The origin of the name “Whit Sunday” is generally attributed to the white garments formerly worn by those newly baptized on this feast.
