Monday Housekeeping – Lauds
Daily life at St. Augustine’s House – Lauds
Our custom is that Vigils is followed by an opportunity for silent meditation until Lauds begins at 6 A.M. Lauds includes an opening hymn, four Psalms, a Canticle, a very short bible reading and the “Canticle of Zechariah,” the Benedictus. Each Psalm and Canticle is preceded and followed by an Antiphon appointed for that day. Some of these are set to beautiful ancient tones, but ordinarily they are recited on one note. Lauds lasts about 30 minutes and is followed by time for reading or breakfast before the next office starts at 8.15.
